Lactation Cookies – Do they work?

This is a question I have been asked a fair bit lately. Do lactation cookies actually work? This is a tough one, many people say yes and many so no. There is not enough substantial evidence to state whether these cookies actually produce more milk, however the foods are thought to be natural Galactogogues.

The medical term used to describe anything that increases your milk supple is ‘Galactogogue’ and Fenugreek is one of the most popular natural forms used.

Nature’s Sunshine have a tablet called ‘Breastfeeding Support’ which contains the herbs Fenugreek and Blessed Thistle to help stimulate healthy milk flow. This natural supplement can often be found in health food stores for around $35.

Lactation cookies have become a popular choice for many breastfeeding mothers to make in an effort to stimulate healthy milk flow, however can be hit and miss. The great thing about these cookies is if they are made with healthy ingredients, they can be great for adding in extra nutrition into your diet while you are breastfeeding and the whole family can benefit from their nutrition regardless of their age.

The key ingredients in lactation cookies which are believed to promote lactation are; brewer’s yeast, wheat germ, wholegrain oats and flaxseed meal. Why?

Brewer’s yeast

  • Known for its use in the production of beer. It is a great source of B vitamins, chromium, protein, iron, selenium, magnesium and many other nutrients. It is also considered a probiotic and can aid digestion, however if you are gluten intolerant or Coeliac please check to ensure it is gluten free. Nutritional Yeast may be a better fit for you as it has a similar nutritional profile. The high amounts of B vitamins may help with fatigue and stress, therefore promoting milk supply.

 Wheat germ

  • Contains lots of fiber, healthy fats, zinc, magnesium, potassium and some B vitamins. Those who are gluten free will need to omit this. Just stick to flaxseed meal for the healthy fats and fiber, or alternatively buy a good quality zinc supplement if preferred. The zinc found in wheat germ is important, particularly for boosting the immune system and also for healing as nipples can become cracked. It may also support mood.

Wholegrain oats

  • Great source of fiber, complex carbohydrates, iron and protein. Again if gluten free you will need to find gluten free oats at your health food store or online to substitute, otherwise you could consider quinoa flakes, however they do have a stronger taste. Iron is important for breastfeeding and low iron can result in poor milk supply. You could alternatively consider an iron supplement if iron is really low.

Flaxseeds

  • Are a great source of fiber, healthy fats (particularly omega 3’s) and protein. They are also rich in lignans, an antioxidant that fights free radicals as well as supporting good gut health. Healthy fats are required for good milk supply.

If you are looking at trying lactation cookies this is a recipe that I really like, as it is relatively healthy and uses for more natural ingredients.
